Analysis of Count of Ten by Simon Kyle

Count of Ten by Simon Kyle Parker is one of the recommended scripts that you must read. If you want to feel a mix of feelings, this is the way you can try. It happened to me when I read the script. The dialogues that playwright write can make me angry, surprised, and so more. This script can confound my feeling. If you want to read more about this script, you can download it here.

This script tells about a boy named Scott who always forced to do boxing exercises every day with his father, Hugo until he must stop his study. His father is really hard treating him. Hugo is too ambitious to make his boy win every match. Besides, he's also rude to Scott's friends. I don't know what makes Hugo traiting like that. Actually, it causes Scott being very emotional at the end of the script.

In this script, the playwright uses androgynous method. Because the playwright is a man, so he will use andro method. It's proven by the presence of main character that's a man. After that, we can know more about this method from doing analysis the dialogues and narrations.

We can see tendency at Scott, such as in this narration. Scott, 15, muscular and handsome works a punching bag. Author describes Scott as a cool boy. Another tendency is in this dialogue, "I've just got to think. Whoever I'm fighting. They're probably training just as hard. But if they're training harder than me. I've got no chance of winning." It states that Scott wants to win, so he trains as hard as he can. Same with a man's trait, if he wants something, exactly he will do the best to get it.

We can also infer tendency in Scott's friends, Luke and Joe. When they're worried about him, they try to entertain Scott by saying that Nicky whom I think she is Scott's crush misses him. They try to change the atmosphere in their conversation.

Then, we can look tendency at Nicky's dialogue. When her arm is squeezed by Hugo, she says, "you're hurting me." Whereas she should fight back, not just surrender to Hugo's trait. I infer that she also wants to get Scott's attention. She wants him to help her.

There is also explicit meaning in this script when the characters use the sentence "what the hell". Such as in Nicky and Scott dialogues, "Hey, what the hell?", "You didn't have to do that. What the hell is wrong with you?". "What the hell" usually uses when you don't like something and you want to know what's going on. It means that when Nicky and Scott say that, they're in an uncomfortable moment. They're angry with someone.

After we talk about andro method and explicit meaning in the script, then we move to dialogue analysis of the characters.

In this dialogue, Hugo says to Scott, "Come on, don't quit on me now. Keep going. Hit it!." We know Hugo thinks that Scott is a weak, hopeless person, and Scott thinks that Hugo is ambitious person.

We can also see in this dialogue, when Hugo says to Scott, "Come on. Hit me. You’re never going to land a single punch on anyone moving like that. Your grandmother has better footwork. And she’s in a wheelchair. This isn’t impressing me at all!". Hugo assumes Scott as a weak person, while Scott assumes Hugo as a rough person.

When Hugo sees Joe and Luke, he says, "Hey. Can I help you guys? Is there a reason you're here? You want to talk to Scott? Well, then you come to me first, yeah?"

In that dialogue, we can know that Hugo assumes Joe and Luke as bothering persons. While Joe and Luke assume Hugo as a grumpy person.

Then, let see part of this scene.

Hugo grabs Nicky by the arm and drags her over towards the door.

NICKY

"Hey what the hell?"

 HUGO

"He’s busy. Can’t you see that?"

Hugo gets rough and nasty with her. Squeezes her arm and forces her out.

NICKY 

"You’re hurting me." 

Hugo throws her out and slams the door shut behind her.

From these dialogues, if we use binary opposition, we will know the difference between Hugo and Nicky's characters. Hugo is a rough and nasty man, while Nicky is a weak girl.

Next, we go to the characters' tone. In this script, the main character is Scott. The secondary characters are Hugo, Luke, Joe, and Nicky. The subordinate character is grandmother.

First, Scott's tones are dominant in negative. They are persistent, tired, tormented, shy, bored, angry, regretting, motivated, calm.

PERSISTENT

Scott has little to no energy left. But still he digs down deep and tries to go faster and harder.

TIRED

It can be inferred from these narrations and dialogue.

Scott sits on a bench. Takes a break. Leans back against the wall. His bare chest heaves.

"This isn’t so great. I’m up at six am. Here. Work out all day. Go home and straight to bed. Before I’m up again at six. This  place. My Dad’s car. And my bed. That’s all I see. These past two months, I’ve never been so lonely."

Scott lets out a long sigh.

TORMENTED

He pours a bottle of water all over his head. Coughs and splutters. He finds it hard to breathe normally. As if his lungs could explode.

Scoot sits on the bench. Ice park on his shoulder. He's in hurt and in pain...

HOPELESS

Scott gives up. Out off breathe. His arms flop down. He can't do it.

ANGRY

Scott snaps. He slams his hands hard into the middle of Hugo's chest.

"Then you fight me. A real boxing match this time. No sticks. Put some gloves on and face me. Or are you too much of a coward."

"Dad don't. Let go of her."

"You didn't have to do that. What the hell is wrong with you?".

REGRETTING

Scott stares down at his dad's lifeless body. Struggles to come to terms with what he just done.

MOTIVATED

"I’ve just got to think. Whoever I’m fighting. They’re probably training just as hard. But if they’re training harder than me. I’ve got no chance of winning."

CALM

Scott relaxes and smiles.

Second, we will discuss Hugo's traits. Same with Scott's tones, Hugo is also dominant in negative tones. There are ambitious, grumpy, angry, underrated, and cruel.

AMBITIOUS

"You want to be a champion don’t you. Well I want you to be a champion too. And I always get what I want. Come on! Show me you want it! Show me!"

GRUMPY

"Hey. Can I help you guys. Is there a reason you’re here? You want to talk to Scott? Well then you come to me first, yeah?"

They don’t argue. Or even wait to say goodbye. Frightened by Hugo they both hurry away and exit the gym.

ANGRY

Hugo eyes him up angrily.

UNDERRATE

"Come on. Aren’t you embarrassed? What if the man you’re fighting can lift this. Are you really so weak?"

"Are you even trying? Is this what 110% looks like. Who are you kidding."

CRUEL

Hugo follows it up with another hit. Red marks swell all over Scott’s body. Hugo simply doesn’t care about hurting him.

Tones of Joe and Luke are care and frightened.

CARE

Luke and Joe stand in front of him. They look across at one another. A shared worried glance.

FRIGHTENED

They don’t argue. Or even wait to say goodbye. Frightened by Hugo they both hurry away and exit the gym.

The last is Nicky's tones. Her tones are happy, considerate, shy, surprised, and weak.

HAPPY

Scott relaxes and smiles. Nicky smiles back at him once she sees him on the bench.She leaves the door open behind her and hurries over to him.

CONSIDERATE

"Come to see if you were still alive. Nobodies really heard from you or seen you since you lift school."

SHY

She blushes red embarrassed. Nods. She has.

SURPRISED

Hugo grabs Nicky by the arm and drags her over towards the door. 

NICKY
"Hey what the hell?"

WEAK

Hugo gets rough and nasty with her. Squeezes her arm and forces her out.
"You're hurting me!"

Why the tone is weak, as I explained before, Nicky should be able to defend herself, not just surrender to Hugo's trait.

The issue that's discussed in this script is about family problem. Hugo, Scott's father, that's too ambitious forces his boy to realize father's goal without asking first to the boy what he wants to do it or not. Hugo also forces Scott to stop his study. Exactly it violates Scott's right to get education. This case often happens around us. Parents who don't understand the goals of their children. They just want the children to be a person that they want to be. Honestly, I don't agree with parents who do it to their children. They must be free to choose what they want to be. Parents should encourage them as far as it will be good for their children. And one more, parents don't be selfish people. It's not fair to take away children's rights to obey the will of parents.

At the end of the script, I'm so sorry with Scott's trait that's being so uncontrollable. Begun with Scott that's very angry with Hugo when he hurts Nicky. Scott asks for competing one by one in the round. Finally, Scott hits Hugo all out until he doesn't empower anymore. Then, Hugo is dead caused blow from Scott. After that, Scott is aware of what he does to his father. From here, I'm so disappointed with Scott's trait. Why does he do that?. Although his father is cruel, he's inappropriate to kill his father.

Analysis of Accepting Her by Nikki April Lee

After I read Accepting Her by Nikki April Lee, honestly, I feel something interesting in this script. The playwright is very amazing. She can make me being emotional. Even I almost cry when I read this script deeply. The message and the atmosphere in the script are successfully delivered to the reader. You can download the script here.

This script tells about a girl who has hermaphrodite disorder. Maybe people won't accept her with the condition, including her father. Different than others, her mom and her friend, Blade, don't care about anything. They love Torie the way she is.

In this script, we know that the playwright uses androgynous method. Because the playwright is a woman, she uses gyno method. In gyno method, woman is chosen as the main character, and here Torie is the main character. We can know more the method with doing analysis the dialogues and narrations of the characters.

We can see tendency in Chelsea's character in her dialogue,

"Yeah that. So what? You’re my hermaphra- whatever.And I wouldn’t change a single thing. Any man who can’t accept you can go straight to hell. "

From here, we know that one of woman characters, especially a mom exactly really loves her children, and she will defend all out if her children have a problem.

Here's also implicit meaning of character from Blade, such as in this narration:

Blade and John exchange distasteful glares. John enters an office.Blade exits through nearby door. Mary stops.

A man usually leaves a room when he doesn't like something. At the moment, he tries to hold his anger and choose to calm himself.

We can also find tendency at John in his dialogue:

"If I have to make sacrifices, you will, too." 

A man who is egoistic never lets another person peacefully. He will force her to feel the same condition as him.

Then, In this scene John also implements a trait of man. When he wants to get something, he will do anything until he gets it.

"Corrective surgery. Do this and Blade will be safe." 

"You have twelve hours to change your mind. The minimum number ofyears for sex with a minor is fifteen years. With one phone call, I can make it more. Let’s see how long your love lasts after that." 

John laughs. He exits. Torie chokes back a sob.

He forces Torie so that his willingness will be obeyed.

The playwright also makes tendency at Torie. When her friend, Blade, is arrested, she says that she wants to do surgery. She does that with hoping Blade is not arrested. "I’ll do it," said Torie. A strong woman indeed will do anything, even it will hurt her. Providing her lovely person will be free from problem, she will do it.

After we discuss about gyno method that the playwright uses, we will continue to tone of the characters. There are Torie as protagonist and John as antagonist. Then, secondary characters are Blade, Chelsea, Mary, Police, Doctor, and Nurse.

Let's begin with Chelsea. Her tones in this script are happy and merciful. You can see in the narration and dialogue.

They giggle like children. It clearly states that the person is happy.

"Yeah, that. So what? You’re my hermaphra- whatever. And I wouldn’tchange a single thing. Any man who can’t accept you can go straight to hell.""I love you, Torie."

Chelsea is very a merciful person. She really loves her daughter anything that happens.

Then, we go to Torie's tones. Her tone includes positive and negative tones. There are happy, sad, worried, angry, hesitant, disappointed, and frightened.

HAPPY

Torie laughs. Torie cranks up the volume. They sing along at the top of their lungs. Chelsea drums on the wheel. Torie uses her cellphone as a microphone.

In that narrations, we know that Torie is happy. But, everything changes when her mother dies in the accident. Her tones are dominant in negative.

SAD

Torie stands before a fresh grave, her skateboard in hand.She place a rose on top of the grave. "Goodbye, Mom." John laughs. He exits. Torie chokes back a sob. Torie, in tears, nods..... She kneels with a heavy sob.

From these narrations, we know that Torie is sad due to all things happen to her after her mother died.

WORRIED

John"I see your little boyfriend Brian here has committed a crime. Sex with a minor. At least that's what I'll tell the police...." 

Torie"You can't do that."

ANGRY

Torie breaks from John's grip bound for Blade. Cop 2 rushes to her. She delivered a pinch to his face.

HESITANT

John notices Torie's trembling hand as she takes the pen and papers. Torie loses focus as the gaze at the form with contempt. She hesitates to write.

DISAPPOINTED

With tearful anger, she tears the card in half.

FRIGHTENED

Torie is wheeled into the room. Torie looks about the room frightened.

These narrations clearly state that Torie is frightened.

Let's move to John. His tones are dominant in negative. There are care less, cunning, worried, ambitious, feeling guilty, and aware.

CARE LESS

John exits the office with a female AGENT. He disregards Torie’s presence.

His trait that disregards Torie states that the tone that use here is care less. When a man disregards someone, it means that he doesn't like someone's presence. He has problem with that person, and I think in this case, John still can't accept Torie as her daughter because of her hermaphrodite.

CUNNING

"if I have to make sacrifices, you will, too." here we know that John is a cunning person because he doesn't want feeling sacrifices alone, so he forces Torie feeling it too.

AMBITIOUS

"I can, and I will. Unless you agree to one thing... surgery"

"You have twelve hours to change your mind. The minimum number of years for sex with a minor is fifteen years. With one phone call, I can make it more. Let’s see how long your love lasts after that."

John is an ambitious person. He will do anything so that his willing comes true, including do things in the narration above in order to force Torie to take surgery.

In the resolution, his tones change to be positive.

WORRIED

Torie is wheeled into the room. Torie looks about the room frightened. Her eyes finally find his. John stiffens at the childlike fear in her eyes.

CALM

After Blade says something to John, he is frozen but eventually makes a quiet exit. He can hide his feeling and keep being calm.

GUILTY

.... John gaze at her for the first time with a pinch of regret. ..... Another pinch of regret peeps on John's face. 

AWARE

"Stop the operation! Please stop!"John looks into Torie’s surprised eyes. His face gentle and full of care."That’s my daughter. She’s perfect the way she is."

"You were right. You were always right. We have a great daughter you and I. I never saw it before but now I see. She’s perfect. And so were you." 

Blade's tones are optimistic, panic, sad, angry/disappointed.

OPTIMISTIC

They hold hands. 

 BLADE 

"You sure you want to do this? Your father hates you. Who you are." 

TORIE 

"He’s all I have left." 

BLADE 

"Whatever happens, you’re perfect the way you are."

PANIC

Skaters move around Torie and Blade who are on a incline.Blade paces in a panic.

It clearly describes that his tone in this scene is panic.

SAD

Blade looks up from his cot at John with swollen eyes and a wet face. Blade wipes his face and goes to the bars face to face with John.

DISAPPOINTED

"I hope one day you love something so perfect, so much it hurts. And then I hope someone comes along and takes it away from you. And I hope it hurts like hell." He says that to John because he's disappointed with his traits.

We move to Mary's tone. Here her tone is positive. She has warm and kind tones, such as in this dialogue.

"I’m Mary Geiser. We’ve come to take you home. You are more than welcome in our family."

She also tries to keep Torie's feeling when she wants to tell the truth about John to Torie.

"He has. He abandoned you and your mother because you were...
different. It’ll take time for him--"

It is proven with her spoken that's stumbled and take a pause.

The tones of COP 1 and 2 are assertive.

Such as in this dialogue. "You're under arrest. You have the right to remain silent..." and in this narration. Cop 2 rush to Torie. As usual, cops indeed have assertive tones.

The doctor's tone is neutral. There's no specific tone in his short dialogue, 

"Well Miss Torie, I have you scheduled for next week. Here are a couple of forms to sign so I could help speed up the paperwork process."

And the last is nurse's tone. Her tone is assertive such as in this dialogue. "Sir, you can't be here! This is a sanitized operating room!"

Social issue that discusses in this script is about hermaphrodite sufferer. Generally, many people in this world don't accept presence people who have this disorder. They feel strange with them. Just like in this script, John can't accept Torie as her daughter except she wants to take surgery for changing her. She is being depressed getting coercion from her father. Honestly, I don't agree with John's traits to her. He should accept Torie the way she is because she is prize from God for John and Chelsea.

At the end of the script, I feel so touched. My tears almost fall down when I read the resolution. Finally, Torie, a hermaphrodite sufferer, is accepted by her father. We know that hermaphrodite is a condition when a person or animal having both male and female sex organs, and it happens to poor girl, Torie. John realizes that whatever happened, Torie is her daughter. No matter she's abnormal or not, he loves her literally.

Harapan Masyarakat Kepada Polisi Untuk Mengatasi Kemacetan

Macet..Ya,Masalah yang satu ini memang sudah biasa terjadi di perkotaan.Tapi seiring berjalannya waktu, sekarang macet sudah terjadi dimana-mana. Masalah ini sering kali membuat orang menjadi stres menghadapinya.

Peran polisi sebagai pengayom masyarakat sangat berperan penting dalam mengatasi kemacetan ini.Ada beberapa cara/tindakan yang bisa dilakukan Polisi agar bisa mengatasi kemacetan di Negeri ini.

1. Polisi harus menindak tegas pelanggar aturan lalu lintas yang menyebabkan tambahnya kemacetan di jalan raya.

2. Kebanyakan masyarakat akan menuruti aturan jika ada polisinya saja, sedangkan jika tidak ada polisi mereka melanggar aturan lalu lintas. Solusinya, polisi bisa memasang CCTV di setiap jalan/jalur untuk mengawasi para pengendara supaya ketika ada yang melanggar, bisa langsung diberi peringatan dengan tegas.

3. Mensosialisasikan kepada masyarakat agar mereka menggunakan transportasi umum, seperti busway, bukan kendaraan pribadi. Juga mensosialisasikan agar masyarakat lebih menggunakan sepeda daripada motor/mobil.

4.Mengatur mobil-mobil yang besar seperti trukuntuk melaju di satu jalur yang dikhususkan untuk mobil-mobil besar.

5. Terapkan peraturan 3 In 1 di banyak tempat. Cara ini juga cukup efektif untuk mengatasi kemacetan.

6. Tunjukkan jalur alternatif bagipengendara,agar pengendara tidak menumpuk pada satu jalur yang mengakibatkan kemacetan terjadi.
